KIDS GROW COMPETITION
Elder Park Sunday 14 October
The Nursery and Garden Industry of SA (NGISA) in partnership with the Horticultural Media Association (HMA) is promoting the Nursery and Garden Industries “Kids Grow” programme. This is an edible growing competition to encourage primary school children throughout South Australia and their parents to be aware of healthy eating.
The competition, supported by the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS), encourages children from the State's primary schools to grow any type of edible product, be it herb or vegetable, in a plastic or terracotta growing container that can be transported.
These products will then be taken to Elder Park on Sunday 14 October and placed into a wheelbarrow for a short procession. In evoking the spirit of the early market gardeners pushing their product to market for sale, the children will parade their goods to the Tasting Australia site to Elder Park with the final judging.
Criteria for the judging will be based upon: 1. Health of product (quality) 2. Hygiene of product (no pests or diseases) 3. Information on growing the product (eg: a report on who helped grow, what type of problems did you have growing them and how did they fix it) 4. Display of product (eg: innovation and presentation of project)
Prizes will be given for each category to the successful school.
Michael Keelan, of Radio 5AA's weekend show and Channel 9's popular “Out of the Blue” cooking programme, will interview the children and a visiting international chef will harvest the fresh product grown by the schools - teaching the children how to prepare fresh edible food.
