HORTICULTURAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION REGIONAL TOURS

Depart Adelaide Town Hall
Saturday 13 October

Two separate tours will take participants to visit sites, either demonstrating latest technologies in waste management and recycling, or to sustainable public and private gardens.

TOUR 1 - For the dreamers, designers and educators focusing on horticultural education, and innovative and sustainable design.

First stop is the Urrbrae Education Centre, impressively landscaped home of SA's dynamic new breed of designers and horticulturalists (includes Storm Water Management wetlands). Next stop is the Mt Barker Waldorf School, where gardening is an integral part of the curriculum conducted in tranquil grounds maintained on biodynamic principles.  After a visit to a Community garden combining organic vegetable growing with community art projects, visitors will be enchanted by Tickletank, an artist's garden and converted tank house. Finally, be soothed and stimulated by an inspiring hills garden with climate compatible plantings, low water use and striking environmental art.

TOUR 2 - For innovation junkies who get their kicks from state of the art production horticulture best practice, recycling gadgets and gizmos, and seriously sustainable urban design.

First stop is Jefferies green waste management and recycling depot followed by tours through the Virginia Horticultural Centre and the mind-blowing new 8ha hydroponic tomato production facility, DeVine Ripe, with its mechanised fertigation, and recycling of water and CO2. Next, a chance to observe best farm practice with rainwater harvesting, revegetation and waste plastic recycling and then onto Lewis production nurseries. Finally a guided tour of Mawson Lakes, a 21st Century community of 22,000 residents, workers and students which truly is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable made possible by partnerships between government, developers, community, schools, University SA and the Botanic Gardens.
